You may have heard of Pay-Per-Click advertising which is certainly a viable starting place for any business focused site. It is certainly justifiable to determine a cost to pay for each new visitor and to determine that cost based on your conversion rate (how many clicks to acquire a new customer) and the amount you are willing to pay to acquire a new customer, but there is nothing like acquiring customers for free. One of the most effective Internet marketing methods is to acquire a wealth of new customers at no cost through searches performed in search engines - this is called organic search engine marketing. The great thing about designing your site for users and good organic search results, is that they share a lot of the same characteristics. Search engines evaluate sites based on the value they see that your content has to visitors.

So what are the most important things you need to consider to ensure that your home based business or company site has good organic search engine rankings?

The basics:
1. Your selection of keywords for your site's topic
2. Your page titles and how important they are to search engines
3. The text on your page(s) - including the use of keywords on the page and keyword density.
4. The links between sections of your site
5. The use of images on your site (and alt image tags)
6. Links to your site from other sites.

One thing you need to be prepared for is that the first time you attempt organic search engine optimization or search engine marketing, it's a lot of work and takes a lot of time.

You may also find that you have to keep going over documents that describe how to optimize your site in detail many times to see if you missed anything, and chances are you will. You will need to stay up to date with latest trends and changes with search engine algorithms.

Like anything new, it takes a while to master search engine marketing, but once you do, you will find that it becomes much easier to do, the more often you do it. It will eventually become second nature to ensure that your site and pages are designed to rank highly for organic search results.

As your site ranks higher in the search engines for organic search results it will bring in more customers and that means earning more money without having to pay an acquisition fee (I.E. a per click fee, or per thousand banners viewed fee) to acquire those new customers.
